How will SHOW change the future of transportation?

SHOW aims to promote and evaluate the future transformation of a current city traffic environment and ecosystem to a fully sustainable one driven by automation, electrification, cooperativeness, inclusiveness and usership (as shown in the figure below). This requires changes in the operation of all motorised transportation means and fleets, namely:

Automated PT (passenger Transport):

  • More and more the truck-based PT lines (i.e. metro, light rail) are getting automated; rest fixed lines (buses) are among the first targeted to be SHOW integrates in its pilots several services, such as: Automated metro of Rennes, automated bus in Madrid and Copenhagen. Relevant operations are not only encompassing the main site services but also parking, cleaning and maintenance services for automated PT fleets (i.e. in Madrid) as well as emphasis on supporting automated bus stop handling (in Sweden, Germany, etc.).

Automated DRT (Demand Responsive Transport):

  • Feeders and people movers formulate currently the backbone of emerging automated urban services and are present in all SHOW mega and satellite sites, namely over 500 of them will be Their operation ranges from first/last mile transport services to service lines for specific areas (Mannheim Franklin, University campus in Linköping, and hospital areas in Turin, Copenhagen, Rennes) or even linking flexibly a city centre with a peri-urban area (i.e. Salzburg City with its hinterland).

Automated MaaS (Mobility as a Service) and robo-taxi fleets:

  • For first/last mile connection as well as covering all types of user needs, SHOW researches the links between the above automated fleets with MaaS services, including relevant car, ebike and bike However, in the future many of these services will be offered by AVs (i.e. ShareNow Daimler/BMW joint venture); thus, SHOW connects also relevant automated MaaS to some of its sites (s.a. Rouen, Aachen, Karlsruhe, Vienna and Madrid).

Automated Logistics and Laas (Logistics as a Service):

  • Both for first/last mile delivery as well as for full urban logistics delivery of specific food, non-bulky commodities) automated vehicle fleets constitute a SHOW considers them as standalone (i.e. FURBOT cargo vehicle in Trikala), but mainly in mixed schemes with passengers and goods delivery by common automated vehicle fleet, in temporal (i.e. passenger at days, goods at nights) or spatial (passenger and goods in different compartments within the same vehicle or goods vehicle following the passengers one by platooning). Relevant SHOW pilots include Rennes and Aachen.
